What happened to all that "individualism", "creativity" and "provoke dialogue" stuff?
sounds like a little heat was applied by a few POLITICIANS and Akoo folded.
I live in Newark and pass thru Broad and Market daily . . .I had never heard any negative
comments regarding th eold billboard...in fact, I literally saw dozens of people photographing
the billboard.
"MAN UP" Akoo. We know what this is really about. Calvin Klein didn't rip his ads down...but then again, I dont think he was asked to

The previous picture was creative. nothing more. Calvin Klein ads & D&G ads are WAY more provacative than AKOO jean ads. I was listening to the radio about this issue in Atlanta, and I've been searching for this picture because I wanted to see what it looked like, and was actually disappointed. I actually had more in mind of the ad my self (haha), but the point i'm trying to make is no one says boo about CK billboards in Manhattan, Times Square, but when a "rapper" displays creative abilities in areas other than music, its inappropriate. I loved the ad. The new one, not so much.

The replacement add is much better than the original. I understand that there's always pressure to push the envelope especially in a controversial manner, but the problem is it sends a very poor message to consumers about what manufacturers actually think of us. As a woman it's degrading...as an African-American it's really shameful. When your creative inclinations always lean towards misogyny, there's a defect in the source. Make a good product and people will come. Showing a woman on her knees in surrender before a man takes away from the actual purpose of your product. I didn't know the product existed and I'm almost turned off by it now. Don't lose your customer base by feeling like you have to be raunchy. You can be classy without being nasty.

I think it's a boring replacement. Truth is most people need to get some good sexin and that billboard was just another reminder that they have a crappy sex life. Let's be real. Americans need more sex and need to stop acting like they aren't freaks.

I dismiss any notion that this billboard would necessarily encourage young, impressionable males to ask their female counterparts to engage in oral sex more frequently than if they were not wearing the Akoo product being advertsied. However, as that is not quite the issue of concern, I will simply say that with respect to negative influence upon the youth of Newark, this billboard is only a small blip upon the radar. Let us Responsible Adults face the facts. Youths with even the smallest degree of functional literacy in these times can and will seek out far more lewd imagery in other places. Sure, one might say, "Why add at all to that problem"?. But looking deeper, anyone can tell that this ballyhoo will only provide more brand notoriety for T.I. himself, which is exactly what he wants. Any publicity is good publicity, so long as its within the realm of legal aged adults and concerning things not banned by law.

It is all much ado over nothing.

Suggestive? Come'on man, This is not bad at all compared to Ads from Clavin Klein, Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabana that showed or shows nudity in prints or billboards, not to mention the TV Ad's that run today. As a Photographer, I believe this Ad is shot well, photography is an Art. And by all means, sex(uality) SELLS! We see it everyday, In magazine and TV Ad's

So what are the real underlying issues? Well, I believe it starts with the repressed sexuality of African Americans, that starts with the exotic reference placed on them. Caucasians call African Americans "exotic" & wanted to have what was considered "taboo". African Americans didn't want this title of exotic and therefore will shun the reference of it, even when done as art and done creatively in the realm of advertisement. There is no enormous repression of sexuality in the caucasian community & it seems that the ads created by designers mentioned above is the status quo. How is Akoo's ad any different from the norm?

I think it's sad that an African American Designer has to suffer.

showing a black woman in this position only illustrates, demeans and perpetuates hatred and abuse of women, particularly Black women and advances the thug life style. Have you a mother, a sister, a woman in your life who deserves better portrayal of what is divine? You don't have to put women down to sell your wares. enough already.
